Old business solution helps solve health care expense: Bartering

(WSAU) -  The high cost of health care is leading some companies and independent contractors to one of the oldest forms of doing business.... bartering.

Stuart Kay from Trade International Exchange says many businesses are exploring bartering, where they trade their goods and services for what they need to build their business or help their bottom line. “Whether they have theatre seats that are not full, or dental chairs that are not full, or extra time where they can do graphic design, we enroll them in the barter exchange and help them attract new business, people they may have never ever met. Then with that new business, they can utilize that value and that revenue to buy things to help build their business and ultimately produce cash.”

Many people put off important health care visits, especially during the first part of the year when their health plans require patients to pay their annual deductibles down, which is not good for your health and is not good for your health care provider’s business either. Kay says this helps both. “It’s a great way for the doctor to be able to serve their patients greater than they ever have, and allows the patients and our members to take better care of themselves, because not going to the doctor is a big mistake.”

Kay is building a larger network of health care providers, pharmacies, specialists, along with the network of other types of businesses so they can all help each other. Trade International Exchange has their own currency, which allows you to save real cash for other purposes.
Kay says bartering works well for small and big businesses. He says it is also a good way to pay for deductibles on your existing insurance without taking cash from your wallet or your flex spending account.

Most tax rules apply to barter dollars much like they do to real dollars. Kay says your accountant can help you manage that... and there are accountants that barter their services, too.
